The best AI script coverage tools in 2026: how to choose

Last checked: 20 October 2026. We make Cine Novelist, which is on this list. We have described the others by what they say on their own sites and tried to say plainly where they fit better. None of these tools, ours included, is a human reader.

First: should you use AI coverage at all?

The Australian Writers' Guild said in July 2026 that AI coverage services do not employ script assessors, that an assessor's expertise cannot be replaced by generative AI, and that writers should weigh privacy and training-data risk. We agree that AI coverage is not a substitute for an experienced reader.

Where it can help: a quick, repeatable record of what a working draft establishes and what it is missing, before you spend money on a person. A reasonable rule, and the one most screenwriting forums arrive at: AI on working drafts, a human when the script is close.

Five questions that matter more than the feature list

  1. Is my script used for training? Get the answer in writing from the vendor's policy.
  2. Does it read the whole draft? Some tools sample or charge by page count.
  3. Can I check a note against the page? If a note describes a scene that isn't there, discard the report.
  4. Does it separate what's on the page from its opinion? Scores and verdicts are opinions.
  5. Will it push my script towards the average? Watch for notes that resolve every ambiguity.

The tools

Tool What it is built around (per its own site or reliable comparison) Free way in Best for

ScriptReader.ai Five independent AI reads plus one synthesis, with analysis down to the scene First three scenes free, no card Low-cost, scene-level feedback on early drafts
ScriptLix Free screenplay coverage alongside a screenplay studio and a writers' blog Free coverage Writers who want a free first read

Prescene A workspace that keeps a script's characters, scenes and versions connected: Ask, draft comparison, Coverage Free screenplay editor Companies and writers working across drafts or a slate
RoastMyScript Category scores, pages and scenes flagged, tailored to genre, reviewed by a human, delivered in 1-2 days No A blunt, human-checked read
Callaia (callaia.ai) Per-script coverage with notes and scores, character summaries, comps, cast suggestions and release recommendations Not shown One-off full reports with market framing

Human coverage still exists. Coverage Ink and Script Reader Pro, among others, offer paid human reads. WeScreenplay, ScreenCraft and The Script Lab closed in early 2025, and Coverfly ended its platform services on 1 August 2025.

Where Cine Novelist is not the best choice

  • If you want a score. Cine Novelist does not lead with a number. ScriptLix and Prescene do, if a score is what you need.
  • If you only want the opening pages roasted. A short-sample tool like RoastMyScript is simpler.
  • If you need a slate triage tool for a company's inbox. Prescene is built around that.
  • If you need a human. No tool on this list is one.

Where it is

  • If you need to keep the ending you won't betray. Irreversible choices are named and left with you.
  • If you want to argue with the notes. Page, inference and gap are on different lines.
  • If coverage is the start, not the end. The same film moves to a bible, pitch, board, cast and finance story without being turned into a different picture.

FAQ

What is the best AI script coverage tool? It depends on the job. For a score, ScriptLix or Prescene. For cheap scene-level notes, ScriptReader.ai. For a diagnosis that separates page from opinion and carries into development, Cine Novelist. For judgment, a human reader.

Is there free AI script coverage? Several tools have a free way in, including ScriptLix, ScriptReader.ai, StoryNotes, Greenlight Coverage and Cine Novelist (150 free credits, no card). Free tiers change, so check the site on the day.

Is AI coverage as good as a human reader? No. It can give a quick record of what a draft establishes. It cannot supply an experienced reader's judgment about craft and the market.

Is my script safe with AI coverage tools? Read each vendor's privacy and security page and ask the training question directly. Cine Novelist's security page says inputs are used to run the desk you asked for, and files are not sold or used to advertise to third parties.
