Free script coverage

Screenwriters ask the same question on every forum: is script coverage worth paying for? Close behind it: where can I get it free? Paid coverage often runs to $75–$300 or more per script, so the question is fair. This page sets out the real free routes, what each gives up, and where Cine Novelist fits.

New to coverage? Start with our guide to script coverage, or use the free script coverage template to cover a script yourself.

The free routes

Route What you get What it costs you
Peer swap (writing groups, forums) Honest notes from another writer Time: you read theirs. Quality varies
Contest feedback Notes bundled with some contest entries The entry fee. Notes are often brief
Self-coverage with a template Discipline; you see your own script fresh Your own blind spots stay blind
General AI chatbots Instant scene-level notes Often no page citations; may not read the whole script; may flatter
AI coverage free tiers Samples or limited reports Usually a partial read, a capped page count, or one report

None of these is worthless. Each makes a trade.

What free coverage usually misses

The whole script. Many free options read the opening or a sample. Structural problems usually show in the second half.

Page evidence. A note like "the second act sags" is useless without the pages it's talking about.

The difference between defect and design. A scene that makes the reader uncomfortable may be broken, or may be doing exactly what it should. Free notes rarely separate the two.

Your ending. Generic feedback tends to push every script towards a tidier, safer resolution.

What writers worry about

Writers on r/Screenwriting raise the same concerns again and again: that AI "only regurgitates", that their script will be used for training, that paid services have quietly swapped human readers for AI, and that AI notes flatter. The last two are about honesty. Whatever you use, know whether a human or a machine wrote the notes, and check the notes against the page.

How Cine Novelist fits

New accounts get 150 free credits, no card needed. Use them on Coverage.

Coverage is a diagnosis of the whole file, not a rewrite. Paste a draft, or bring a PDF, Final Draft or Fountain file. Page, gap and hypothesis are labelled apart. Designed discomfort and defect are named separately. It won't rewrite the film into something safer, and it won't silently cut the last act.

An example from the desk (a fictional file):

The last image is the kitchen light left on. She doesn't go back inside. Page: she turns the key, sees the light, and leaves. No return setup in the prior forty pages. Read: the light is a choice she made before we arrived. Gap: a mid-film neighbour scene explains the light. If it stays, the ending is illustration. If it goes, the ending is earned. Irreversible: she doesn't go back inside. A rewrite that "clarifies" the light makes a different film.

A sensible order

  1. Self-cover with the template.
  2. Run AI coverage on every draft to catch structural issues.
  3. Swap with a peer you trust.
  4. Pay for human coverage once, on the draft you will actually submit.

Questions

Can I get script coverage for free?

Yes, through peer swaps, contest feedback, self-coverage with a template, or AI free tiers. Each trades depth, time or page evidence.

Is AI script coverage worth it?

For every draft, AI coverage is fast and consistent. For the final submission draft, human coverage still matters. Check any note against the page.

What file formats does Cine Novelist accept?

You can paste a draft, or bring a PDF, Final Draft or Fountain file.
